Yet to Read… Delightful Indie Fantasy

Yet to Read is the weekly meme where I take a look at books on my shelves (physical and digital) that I haven’t gotten around to reading yet and books on my wishlist that I’ve wanted to add to my shelves for a while. I link these posts up to  Can’t-Wait Wednesday and Shelf Control!

I thought I had missed this post this week but did you know it’s not Friday and is in fact, Wednesday? Wild! This means we can take a look at a couple of books I am still yet to read, this week I’m in a fantasy mood and when I thought about my wishlist book I knew exactly which direction to go: delightful indie fantasy. Bonus points: they’re both purple. We love a matching colour theme!

the palace job by patrick weekes - yet to read delightful indie fantasy dragons and whimsy

The most powerful man in the republic framed her, threw her in prison, and stole a priceless elven manuscript from her family.

With the help of a crack team that includes an illusionist, a unicorn, a death priestess, a talking warhammer, and a lad with a prophetic birthmark, Loch must find a way into the floating fortress of Heaven’s Spire–and get past the magic-hunting golems and infernal sorcerers standing between her and the vault that holds her family’s treasure.

It’d be tricky enough without the military coup and unfolding of an ancient evil prophecy–but now the determined and honourable Justicar Pyvic has been assigned to take her in.

But hey, every plan has a few hitches.

The Palace Job by Patrick Weekes has been on my shelves for a time. I actually had a review copy of this one back when I was blogging as Once Upon a Time but I just never got around to it, which is a shame because I’ve heard very good things and it sounds like a great read. If I remember right, I picked up a fresh copy on Kindle in a sale at some point? And I am determined to get around to it when I can. Determined!

a wizards guide to defensive baking t. kingfisher - yet to read delightful indie fantasy dragons and whimsy

Fourteen-year-old Mona isn’t like the wizards charged with defending the city. She can’t control lightning or speak to water. Her familiar is a sourdough starter and her magic only works on bread. She has a comfortable life in her aunt’s bakery making gingerbread men dance.

But Mona’s life is turned upside down when she finds a dead body on the bakery floor. An assassin is stalking the streets of Mona’s city, preying on magic folk, and it appears that Mona is his next target. And in an embattled city suddenly bereft of wizards, the assassin may be the least of Mona’s worries…

T. Kingfisher had to make this feature at some point or another. I had them recommended to me when I was first getting my reading groove back and am reliably informed that their books are absolutely fantastic. Of course, I took this advice and added a decent chunk of their bibliography to my wishlists and first up is A Wizard’s Guide to Defensive Baking because it sounds absurd and delightful and… just everything. I am dying to read T. Kingfisher’s books!

Have you read either of these? What’s on your list this week? Let me know in the comments!

      1. And another. I started with Defensive Baking and gobbled my way through pretty much everything else right after. Then I re-read a bunch of them right away (which I don’t usually do). She’s marvellous.
